The latest Mercedes-AMG sports tested in the Jarama

Imagine for a moment that your mission for a day out to test the most representative of the latest creations of Mercedes-AMG. A number of sports between 420 and 571 hp, supercharged V8 engines and air, coupes, sedans four and five seats and even the odd tandem. The first thing you would think is that the ideal setting for such a display of “horsepower” would be a circuit, and indeed it is. We could not resist the invitation of Mercedes-Benz, AMG and Michelin to attend one of our favorite tracks, the Jarama circuit in Madrid, to taste the best wines from Affalterbach.

For a whole day, virtually around the clock, RACE instructors were invited to meet the range of Mercedes AMG and operation of specific courses organized for Mercedes-Benz AMG customers in order to improve their skills to steering wheel, why not say, having a good time. In both respects our expectations were well met. Many horses on the track and a staff with machines like Mercedes SLK 55 AMG C 63 AMG Coupe Class, Class E 63 AMG, CLS 63 AMG and the jewel in the crown, the SLS AMG Roadster.

First tests off-piste and pre-heating
The briefing day we began with a technical and a number of practices to test our skills. A braking technique avoids sliding on a track first, and later try to get hold of the control of a Mercedes C-Class Estate with over 200 hp without stability control and a polished concrete runway covered with water and with the same grip the asphalt covered with snow and ice. Another unavoidable test passed by the typical layout buzzard, or Mickey Mouse, and what better than a Mercedes CLS to circumvent cones and expedite the movement of hands.

After this introduction it was time to enter the circuit to study the curves section by section. Overall the track was divided into three areas that would allow us to thoroughly analyze the post-test scenario. Well worth it to be well educated before we get to gallop, eh?

After this warming came the most awaited moment, the track and going to start filming in batches.

Mercedes SLK 55 AMG, “floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee”
Although it was within expectations, it is surprising that one of the most fun was also the most powerful. The Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG has a V8 engine only 422 hp, but thanks to its featherweight has become the Muhammad Ali of AMG “floats like a butterfly and sting like a bee.” The fact of not having turbo did not become an issue at any time. On the role was not only the less powerful but also slower, but also the most agile cornering and more fun to try to break its back in the slower corners.

Frankly put such motor vehicle is a brutal, in all good sense, a delight for any lover of speed. But through it all electronic systems Torque Vectoring Brake and give us security.

This sports car costs € 82,550, which is not exactly a small amount, but get a feeling and a sports thanks to its retractable hardtop can also unloading is a joy that we can hardly enjoy their rivals. The panoramic roof electrocromatic function that darkens and lets the sun’s rays with a single click, is simply sublime. Even the most powerful range of Porsche Boxster or BMW Z4 are much cheaper. The closest thing we could try is a Porsche Cayman S that it rises to € 71,000. Nothing comparable to what the V8 gives this little German toy.

Mercedes C 63 AMG Coupé: the youth sports coupe and we all expected
Having enjoyed many rounds with a two-seater as the SLK, you think everything will be nothing, but nothing is further from the truth. The Mercedes C 63 AMG Coupé is another sport that also has rear seats and is not intimidated at the featherweight AMG. In addition to its most practical and priced at € 81,660, and I say only because it’s cheaper than an SLK, left me completely misplaced. Their weight effectively corrects an engine of 6,208 cm3, 457 hp and a whopping 600 Nm.

The “change” of which we have spoken of Mercedes-Benz has also been noted in AMG C-Class Coupe and this is a good example of this. A relatively small coupe, a style of car that is not particularly popular in Europe, but ultimately the ideal compromise between sportiness and practicality.

The lack of agility on the SLK supplies a lowered chassis, rear differential and tires 235/35 R19 front and 255/30 R19 rear. Thinking with the heart and brain, probably this would be my choice of day.

Mercedes Class E 63 AMG and CLS 63 AMG Mercedes: sportiness and comfort is also possible
Then came the time of the biturbo, Class E 63 AMG and CLS 63 AMG are the heavyweights of the day with the new 5.5 V8 biturbo engine of 525 hp (and to 558 with AMG Performance Package) and a waste of torque with 700 Nm . More radical than we have gone to two sedans that just might help us to go from home to work, which for a trip with the whole family, to enjoy a few rounds at the Jarama circuit.

But comfortable sport seats with massage programs, but what the hell, circuit there is no need for that. The lateral and lumbar seats leads to a new level when we find out specific programs for sporty driving that dynamically adjust the supports to hold our body in the side supports. So when we make a left turn to our right side inflates the seat, and for a right turn, so that our body does not move one iota. In short, while outside everything happens very quickly inside the cabin traveling with all the tranquility and comfort of the world.

But obviously both comfort and sportiness also paid much. The Class E 63 AMG amounts to € 121,500 and € 132,800 CLS AMG. The latter were surprised by its agility, overcoming the handicap imposed by physics itself, its body almost 5 meters long.

Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster: the wingless “gullwing”
And finally came the dessert, the new Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster. What can we say of a sporty 571 hp? The first time I tried the Mercedes SLS AMG surprised the decibel level that flooded the cabin, the surprise is that in this case despite the canvas roof was not me that the noise was much more uncomfortable (for the uncomfortable consider the roars a V8) with the top closed. In the dynamic section I would be hard to say whether the decline is reflected both performance and body stiffness as expected.

Honestly the only thorn I could get stuck behind this day was not having tried a SL 63 AMG SL 65 AMG or to compare and to resolve certain questions that I have between them and the SLS AMG Roadster. If I could climb aboard a Mercedes SL 350 and obviously face to face and even dispense with gull wings, in beauty the SLS AMG Roadster wins by a landslide.

Unfortunately these courses are organized for AMG customers via dealers. Mercedes-Benz Luckily organizes several courses, with more modest models as Class B, Class C Coupe and from September the new Class A, open to anyone who wants to join in Reserves currently serve on the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona from late June. In this case the tests include braking with elusive, asymmetric braking, lane change and stability control.
